Mashable.com announces worldwide Social Media Day

June 23, 2010 – Social media has the Internet abuzz and it’s fueled by Mashable.com’s recent announcement that June 30th will be the first annual Social Media Day (#SMday in twittertalk).

Since the statement last week, over 500 events have been created worldwide through Meetup.com, a social gathering site that allows people to find events that interest them. These events aren’t only attracting the social media junkies but also those curious about what it is all about.

Angel Oakley, president of Unicatis Marketing Group, was ecstatic to hear the news. To help spread the word, she has organized a meetup event for the suburbs of Chicago.

“If Mashable’s declared it, we’re on it,” says Ms. Oakley, “Mashable is an excellent online resource and we’re excited that they created this movement. It presents a rare chance to get those who are immersed in social media and those who are completely new to it all in the same place.”

Angel Oakley’s event is one of the first and only Social Media Day meetups hosted for the Chicago Suburbs. It will be hosted at Ivy Restaurant in Wheaton on June 30th at 5:30pm. The event is Free and open to the public. Sign up today at http://www.meetup.com/Mashable/10705/

What about the CEO of a company using social media to promote his company? It seems a little risky, true, but it is possible for a CEO to flex his/her social media muscles and simultaneously strengthen the company.

CEO's, you may currently employ staff to manage various social media networks for your company. But as the big guy behind the desk, the leader of the pack, your social media involvement can have the most influence on your brand’s success by being the one to lead it into the burgeoning arena of social media.

The benefits? The March 2009 Forbes article,  “Yes, CEOs should Facebook and Twitter,” points out that CEO’s no longer have an excuse for ignoring Web 2.0.

If a CEO wants to:

- Extend their brand

- Create a corporate culture based on listening and learning

- Establish a strong leadership profile

- Promote authentic interaction

- Instigate customer action
